Website Design

What really matters with website design?

First of all, the website needs to attract traffic. That can be achieved in many ways both offline and on. For example, a memorable domain name helps people to remember to visit your site.  Since google local is presently free, it is clearly wise to  do the key factors needed to  rank well on google local so that your business appears on the map for the relevant terms. But above all people want traffic from google search.

To do that involves two key factors – first what your site says about itself. That means choosing keyword expressions that people search with enough traffic but not too much competition.  So keyword analysis is the first step. Then targetting each page or post on the website to gathering traffic for those terms. The searched expression needs to appear in the title of the post, the headline of the post, and once or twice on the page too.  So platforms like wordpress can certainly help with ensuring that happens automatically, leaving the site owner to create content.

Second is  linking – what other sites say about you, using exactly the same expression in the links. So if both you, and other important sites say your site is about “dog training collars” google catches on!

Beyond traffic is conversion.

There are many aspects to conversion , some of which we mention here. First you must grab attention. Too much visual distraction and clutter help to confuse the reader.  An attention grabbing headline which gives a reason to read for example – not “joe bloggs accountants” but “Do you make these  mistakes with taxation? – And three simple ways to put them right”. Then is a single action you want to guide them to take. Sign up for free information for example. Having made the offer, it is then important to establish credibility and value and give them a reason why now!! – These written or video messages are vital, as is guiding each page to a clear objective.

Tracking and analytics is also vital, knowing who is visiting the site, where they come from and what they do when they come. Without this information, it becomes very difficult to know how to improve.

The final key aspect of website design is creative and graphic design. The design helps in several key aspects. First to establish credibility. An accountants website is very different from an avante garde hairdresser. The designs must communicate the mood, of proffessionalism, art or creativity and so on. The design must also assist the message not conflict with it.
